Chicken parmesan is layered with cheese and tomato sauce (and then more cheese) to create a gooey and sensational meal. Learn how to make this classic dish at home using fresh ingredients.
Chicken parmesan or ‘la parmiggiana’ in Italian has all the ingredients of great Italian food. This meal is very filling and can be fun to make with a family member or friend. Now let’s get cooking…
Ingredients (for a party of 4):
4 chicken breast cutlets
1 bag of mozzarella cheese
2-4 tbsps of Parmesan
1/2 white onion
2-3 cloves of garlic
1/4 cup of flour
3-4 eggs
1/4 cup of panko bread crumbs
28 oz can of Cento Peeled Tomatoes
1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
4-6 fresh basil leaves
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
When you’re preparing your chicken cutlets, make sure they are not too thick. The thicker the cut, the longer it will take to cook. Cut your chicken breast in half if it’s too thick.
On two separate cutting boards, arrange one with flour spread out and the other with bread crumbs. In the middle, place a medium sized bowl.
In the bowl, mix your eggs. To start, take a chicken cutlet and cover with flour. Then transfer the cutlet to the bowl of eggs and cover thoroughly. Finally, cover your cutlet in bread crumbs and set aside.

Repeat this process for all 4 cutlets making sure they are covered with all of the ingredients before moving on.
In a medium sized pan, cover with olive oil and place on medium heat.
Add your cutlets to the pan and let them cook for 5-10 minutes.
When they are golden-brown on each side, remove from heat and place them in an aluminum foil and olive oil covered baking pan.
Now let’s work on the sauce…
Grab a medium sized pot and cover the bottom with olive oil.
Chop your onions and garlic and add to the pot on low heat. Once the mixture is golden and translucent, open your can of tomatoes and add them to the pot. You can crush up the tomatoes with a kitchen spoon if you are using the recommended peeled tomatoes.
Add a pinch of salt and 2 broken apart basil leaves and let your sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes.
Once your chicken cutlets and sauce are ready, add a layer of tomatoes sauce on top of your cutlets. Then, add a layer of mozzarella. Repeat this for 2-3 layers. For the final layer after the mozzarella, add broken apart basil leaves and then a layer of parmesan cheese on top.
Bake your chicken parmesan for 5-10 minutes on each side. Set a timer and check to see when your chicken is golden brown on both sides. That’s when you’ll know it’s done! If you’re not sure if your chicken is done, check it’s temperature with a kitchen thermometer and if it’s above 165 degrees you’re good to go!
Serve warm out of the oven for maximum gooey-deliciousness.
