Silky Smooth Oysters

There’s nothing quite like fresh oysters, and restaurant prices are usually less-than-favorable. Learn how to shuck your own oysters and save money!

I like to buy my oysters from 99 Ranch Market which has a lot of fresh fish. If you’re paying more than 99 cents for fresh oysters, it’s time to find a new seafood vendor!

Ingredients (for a party of 2):

6 fresh oysters

1 tbsp of lemon juice

1 tsp of Crystal hot sauce

In order to properly shuck your oysters, you’ll need an oyster knife. Otherwise, it will be near impossible to open them on your own.

Take the oyster in your non-dominant hand and look for the opening at the base of the oyster. You’ll want to slide you knife in that hole first in order to open up the shell. Put pressure from your knife up toward the top shell until you hear a cracking sound. From there, slide your knife around the perimeter of the oyster without releasing too much water from the inside.

Place your knife back at the base of the oyster and give a final push until you hear another cracking noise. Peel off the top of your oyster shell and glide your knife around the oyster meat, again without letting too much water out.

Squeeze fresh lemon juice and Crystal hot sauce over your oyster and enjoy fresh!
